Why Being A Realtor Can Be A Difficult Job

Realtors have a reputation in that it’s an easy going, slow paced, big commissions, non-stressful job. And although it can be so at times, being a Realtor can be difficult. There are many ups and downs within any career and being a Realtor is no exception. Some days are fantastic and everything seems to fall into place perfectly, and some days are much more difficult.

Three reasons why being a Realtor can be difficult

  1. The disappointment of clients. There are many things realtors do that try to mitigate any kind of surprises or disappointment for a client after they take possession or decide to move forward with the property. Home inspectors do not have laser vision goggles to see behind walls, we cannot control the wrong doings of mortgage brokers or simply unfortunate circumstances. I keep in touch with all of my clients in the hopes that they have no issues, and that they are happy with their properties long term.
  2. Although the schedule of a Realtor can be flexible, it can also have extremely non-consistent hours. No days will be the same and often you are having to cater to your schedule to your clients schedule and their availability when viewing properties. The inconsistency can be difficult to maintain and putting a good system in place is crucial to ensure no scheduling mishaps. Family members often become frustrated with the “last minute” appointments we take and it is difficult to commit to extracirriculars in the evenings.
  3. The times where it seems like you are doing it all. And I do mean it all, negotiator, photographer, marketer, construction coordinator, and the list goes on. There are many hats to where as a Realtor and lets face it, there is no prior job experience that prepares for you all of the different hats you wear in this career. Inevitably, there are certain things that will come naturally to you as an agent and some things that you have to work really hard to get better at. Some realtors are exceptional at the construction aspect of real estate and will severely struggle showing up on social media and growing their audience that way.

Even with the more difficult aspects of being a real estate agent, the job is pretty great. You get to help people make giant decisions and the fact that you are trusted to help them through that is pretty special. The potential for personal growth is completely unlimited in this industry as there is always something to learn.
